Easy Interview – Overall Positive Experience – No – Fri, 19 Jul 2019
Interviewed Jul 2,019 in Brooklyn, NY (took 1 days)
First of all, I know I made this section very long and detailed but I thought it would be helpful to describe my interview experience thoroughly for anyone out there who has an interview with Kohl’s for the first time and feels unsure about how it will go.
I applied online for the job position through
Kohl’s careers website when I saw they had a listing for a seasonal sales associate job. To be more precise, this position was for the Kohl’s at the Ceasar’s Bay shopping center in Brooklyn. The day after I submitted my application, I got an email asking me to schedule a date and time online for when I would like to come in for an interview.
My advice about this is to be quick about choosing your time and date because other interviewees take up the slots really fast. Originally I saw many time slots open for the week but hours later when I opened the link again to pick a time, everything for the whole week was no longer available and the earliest I could book was for the following week’s Thursday morning. Afterwards I got a confirmation email with details about where to go when I arrive for the interview.
The day of the interview I made sure to arrive 15 minutes early. My appointment was at 9:30 am so I showed up at 9:15 am. Although the confirmation email stated I should go check in at the customer service desk (which I knew where it was because I have shopped at this Kohl’s location many times before), I stopped to ask a cashier if she could direct me to customer service. And it's good that I did because she sent me upstairs to wait to be interviewed. She told me to go past the shoe section and back towards where the restrooms are. Up there, I didn't see anyone. I was already nervous for the interview so it made me more nervous that I now had to figure out what to do. Only the restroom cleaning lady was around so I asked her. She led me to a closed office door but when she knocked no one answered. It was still so early in the morning but a minute later an employee walked by and asked me a few questions to ascertain how I was directed to come upstairs. Later a lady came up and she was the interviewer. She led me into an office room where the interview began.
The interview was short and I got the feeling she was in a hurry since she mentioned she had a lot of interviews to get through. She told me about her job role and then asked me a few questions. The questions weren't hard. I had practiced a little with a teacher beforehand in an effort to be more prepared. I smiled occasionally while answering the questions. Even if you are nervous or don't usually smile while talking, smiling helps if you consider the job position needs someone who is friendly and approachable.
So please do smile and do your best to show you want this job.
I was given a work availability sheet to fill out after the interview was over. This is basically a paper where you write your full name and check off the days of the week you can work for the first two weeks of the job IF you are hired. Getting the work availability sheet is not a confirmation that you got hired, unless the interviewer verbally tells you right then and there that you got the job. I was told to wait for an email within 24 hours. This email is the more official determinant of a hire or no hire. In my case, I got the email the next day and it was a declination email stating they went with another candidate.
